Heavy quadricycle
Rules for the "L7e" class MSVA test:
- max. 15kW
- max. 2m wide and 4m long
- max. 450kg
- rear axle can be solid, or with diff, or only one driven wheel, all are fine
- must have brakes on all wheels
- independent non-hydraulic handbrake
- if a windscreen is fitted it must be safety glass and have washing/wiping provision
- if doors are fitted they must latch securely etc.
- need sidelights, headlights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators, hazards, which must all be E-marked
- sidelights must have visible telltale
- indicators must have visible or audible telltale
- headlight must have dip and main beam mode
- a single central headlight is acceptable if the vehicle is less than 1.3m wide
- need rear reflectors and rear number plate light
- need at least 1 nearside and 1 offside rear-view mirror, which must provide "adequate" field of view
- circular mirrors to have diameter between 94mm and 150mm
- non-circular mirrors to be able to contain a 78mm diameter circle and not to exceed 120mm by 200mm
- speedometer reading mph, illuminated, can't under-read
- horn
- no protruding sharp edges etc., must have at least 2.5mm radius within "prescribed zones"
- throttle must self-close
- exhaust not to exceed 99dB(A)
- there is an emissions check
- tyres must be marked road legal and appropriate speed/load rating
- wooden chassis is OK
- seatbelt only required if it has unladen weight over 250kg
- no roll-over protection required
- 2 seats is allowed
- need a mechanical device to positively lock the steering or transmission, or an electronic immobiliser
- no requirement for mudguards on unbodied vehicles
Tricycle
This is the "L5e" class.
If you make it a three-wheeler then you lose the 15 kW power limit, and you can weigh up to 1000kg.
Main beam optional, hazards optional.
