OK, update: the button-head allen screws won't fit either. New plan is to use M8 threaded sleeves (12mm diameter), and machine a couple of flats on them so that I can tighten them up with a spanner. This may be a good opportunity to try out the rotary axis, I haven't used it since building the new CNC machine.

I've also decided I'm not going to narrow the chassis. I sat on the rails and imagined a passenger next to me and it's only barely big enough as is, and easier to just leave it. Onwards.
