Musical Acoustics Experimental Apparatus
Chapter 2: Impulsive Sounds, Alone and in Sequence
Experimental Goals
- Observe constant perceived rate for different sounds regardless of offset
- Notice rate doubling perception when identical sounds are offset ~50% of period
- Identify transitions: individual pulses → buzz → tone (as frequency increases)
- Measure critical frequencies and offset ranges using the tools below
1. Single Pulse Generation
Wood Sound (Type 1)
Simulates striking wood - warm, dampened attack
Metal Sound (Type 2)
Simulates striking metal - bright, resonant attack
2. Delayed Dual Pulses
Dual Pulse Triggers
Test perception with same vs different pulse types
3. Repeating Pulse Sequences
Sequence Controls
Explore rhythm perception and frequency transitions
